What does it look like when a church is doing everything right on the outside but something vital has gone quiet on the inside? That is the piercing question at the heart of this message drawn from Revelation 2:1-5, where Christ addresses the church at Ephesus. The church there was busy, discerning, enduring, and loyal. By every outward measure, they were succeeding. Yet Christ brings a charge against them that should stop us in our tracks: they had left their first love. Not lost it by accident, but left it. There is a world of difference between those two things. This message calls us to sit with that uncomfortable distinction and ask ourselves honestly whether our spiritual activity has quietly outpaced our spiritual intimacy. The Ephesian church is a mirror held up to any community of faith that has allowed routine to replace relationship. The warning Christ issues is not abstract. The historical reality that the church at Ephesus no longer exists is presented as sobering proof that God means what He says. The lampstand can be removed. But the prescription offered is not complicated. It comes down to three movements: remember, repent, and return. Look back honestly at where we have fallen from, turn our hearts back toward Christ, and begin doing the works that flow from genuine love rather than religious habit. This is an invitation to stop settling for the form of faith while losing its fire.
